Bold free fonts for YouTube thumbnails

By JFFF · Updated

A thumbnail is seen at the size of a fingertip, next to a dozen others, for less than a second, so the title has to read instantly. These eight free JFFF fonts are heavy enough to survive that, in moods from serious to silly. All are free for commercial use, including monetised channels. Each sample is set in the real font file.

Eight free thumbnail fonts

1. Three words, very big

Use three words or fewer and make them fill a third of the image. Thin or decorative fonts disappear at phone size; heavy letters with open shapes stay readable.

Check the thumbnail at its real size, about 168 by 94 pixels in the feed. If you have to squint, the words are too small or there are too many.

2. Contrast does most of the work

Put light letters on a dark background or the other way round, then add a thick outline or a shadow so the text separates from the photo. Bright yellow, white and red are classic for a reason.

Keep the font the same across a series. Viewers start to recognise your videos by the lettering before they read it.

3. Free for monetised channels

These fonts use the SIL Open Font License 1.1, so you can use them in thumbnails, intros and titles on channels that earn money, and in client work.

They cover Latin letters only. For Korean titles, pair them with a Korean font for the Hangul words and keep the English words in one of these.
